So … You wanna bleach your hair?
…But your scared?
You think your hair might fall out?
Your not sure? … What should you do?
What is hair bleach? and what does it do?
Hair bleach is usually hydrogen peroxide and ammonia based.
Of course from company to company the ingredients can alter, however usually this is the bases of bleach. Some hydrators, buffers, and extra lifting ingredients as well as essentials oils can be present to make the process less irritating to the scalp and nose!
So what do these ingredients do?
Bleaching your hair is to remove and break down natural or unnatural pigments in the hair. The main purpose of the hydrogen and ammonia based ingredients are to oxidize which helps the bleaching agents enter the core of the hair to reach the melanin.
In order to “bleach” the melanin, alkaline products are used to lift the hair cuticle. This is why bleaching excessively will cause hair breakage. Repeatedly lifting the cuticle will weaken and dull the hair.
How can you repair/avoid the damage?
Hair care is very important it’s #1.
If you’re going to do chemical processes to your hair, you have to admit you will need special hair care. Investing in a nice new hair colour, will require investment in new hair care products.
Bleach will break down the protein in your hair and because of open cuticle cause your hair strands to lose moisture quicker.
You will need protein based shampoos and conditioners as well as a leave in moisturizer/protein treatment.
Pre-Bleach hair care:
Yes there are many things you can do before bleaching that will diminish the effects of the bleach on your hair.
If you have natural hair you can start with the protein based products right away, because stronger hair bleaches nicer, more even, and goes lighter.
Even natural hair has dry ends and sometimes split ends, which your wouldn’t want to weaken, especially if you’re trying to grow your hair! (90% of women lol)
You can also make sure before using the protein products to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any cheap drugstore silicones clogging your hair, you wouldn’t want the proteins washing into the drain!
Is your hair already dyed?
Use clarifying shampoo!! I reccomend Neutrogena clarifying shampoo and balancing conditioner. or Redkens Natures rescue to really clean the surface of your hair, get rid of silicones and extra pigments from previous hair dye jobs. Using it for a few weeks before will help the bleach go further :) And doing Protein masks or deep treatments every couple of washes will help as well!
After care:
All depending on the feel of your hair, you must figure out the balance between proteins and moisture. If your hair feels elastic you’ll need protein, if your hair is snapping off you’ll need moisture. Shampoo, conditioner and an after care treatment is a VERY good idea! Also a moisturizing cream and sealing serum will make sure to seal in the moisture :)
How to guarantee the results you want:
Unfortunately there no “REAL” guarantee. The darker your hair is (dyed or natural) the more steps it has to go through until it gets blonde. Natural hair will however bleach better than artificially coloured hair. Especially if the artificial colour has been dyed over many times.
It is highly recommended to expect drastic changes to happen in two or even three steps depending in your hair condition, colour etc.
